I want to tell you about my friend, Priscilla Walter, who is 97 years young (and my birthday buddy). Obviously she doesn’t get out right now because of the COVID-19 Stay At Home order, but she is such a gregarious person that she has to do something to keep in touch with people.

In Nelson, we have a little booklet of telephone numbers for everyone in town who is willing to share their contact information. So Priscilla decided that she would call everyone in the town directory, whether she knew them or not, just to check in and see how they were doing in this challenging time. Priscilla is legally blind, so she uses a magnifying glass to read. Calling everyone means reading their phone number and dialing it accurately while using a magnifying glass, but nothing stops Priscilla from reaching out, one person at a time, to let her neighbors know someone cares.

And when things open up again, you can bet that Priscilla will be among the first people to call me up to ask me when I am coming down for a game of Scrabble.

Hi!

It’s Hazael and Carter Lowe and we are part of the Harris Centers Salamander Crossing Brigade! We have been practicing citizen science for many years at Harvey Pond on Glebe Road in Westmoreland- counting and crossing salamanders, frogs, toads, newts and whatever else needs saving from the crush of vehicle tires.

“I like salamander crossing because we get to save lots of salamanders from getting squished by cars” says Carter, nine. “This spring we also picked up roadside trash so the salamanders could cross without walking on garbage.” Last months Good Works winner would be proud of us- thank you Kara!

Hazael reports- “ The data I collect helps Scientists know when salamanders are migrating, how many are present and what species will come at different times.” Says Hazael- eleven. “ I like being out at night and hearing all the frogs calling.”

I think we will be lifelong crossing guards for these little critters because it is fun and you get to interact with nature and do good works by saving lives!

Cheers and Happy Spring to all from Carter and Hazael.

No matter where I go or what I am doing, I always pick up litter. Most of my time is spent picking up other people’s trash in my hometown of Walpole, NH. I feel like we should be proud of where we live and we should give back to our communities and, more importantly, our planet. When I ride around our local roads, I see how litter takes away from this beautiful place. I’ve seen bird nests made with plastic and found countless dead animals inside containers that should not have been there. If I can’t change people’s behavior, I can at least change our environment in the best way I know how. Last year, I started counting how many cans and bottles I picked up (3,076 cans and 1,648 bottles).

This year, I decided to add how many bags I have filled and how many pounds I have collected. Today is April 7th and I’ve picked up 1,639 cans, 849 bottles, filled 44 bags, and collected 895 lbs of litter since January 1st, mostly in Walpole. This past weekend, my husband joined me on a particularly bad section of road and together we collected 349 lbs of litter! I included a picture of our haul from Sunday, April 5th. If one or two people can do this, imagine how much cleaner our world would be if everyone picked up at least one piece of trash a day! I hope this post inspires others to pick up their neighborhoods. After every litter picking session, I reward myself with a treat. Sometimes it’s a cold beverage and a candy bar. Other times it’s a delicious, filling meal – like a tuna melt from The Works.
